Ethical aspects in the New Year's speeches by Vaclav Havel

The thesis "Ethical aspects in the New Year's speeches by Vaclav Havel" interprets and evaluates the content of the New Year's speeches by President Havel in the light of civil and political ethics. In the study part first deals with the theoretical background (the areas of ethical consideration; relationship of ethics, politics, freedom) and also represents Havel`s ethical and philosophical dimension (the philosophical roots and sources of inspiration - the ideas, personalities). The core of thesis analyzes the ethical content and the development of the main ideas New Year's speeches, as well as their contribution to value creation on the road to moral autonomy and a more mature political culture. From the perspective of a new relation and in the context of the former regime, the last chapter reflects on Havel's considerations of ethical topics that are necessary for meaningful functioning of person in society with regard to civil and political ethos. Representation of Social Actors in New Year Speeches of British Prime Ministers

1 ABSTRACT This diploma thesis, grounded in the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, aims to analyse the textual representations of social actors in the New Year speeches of British Prime Ministers. The corpus consists of New Year speeches from the New Year of 2012 to the New Year of 2020. These textual encodings do not need to point directly to the social actors that actually exist in the social world. Instead, they tend to reveal certain ideas that the text-producers have about the social actors. Therefore, the way in which the text-producer portrays a social actor serves as a means of reproducing his or her ideology. In the theoretical part, the purpose of the thesis is considered from the position of Critical Discourse Analysis. Then, the ways of representing social actors in texts are explored together with their impact on ideology and its reproduction. Also, the characteristics of pronouns that can affect the portrayal of these actors are described. The practical part seeks to analyse the New Year speeches with respect to textual means of representing social actors. In doing so, it provides an explanatory critique which aims to reveal what ideas are encoded in textual representations, how they are communicated and how the portrayal of the social actors can affect the recipients. Communications in the period of totality and democracy. (Specification in comparison of new year speeches of presidents G.Husak and V. Havel)

This thesis deals with the influence of totalitarian and democratic regime at the communication abilities and possibilities of then presidents in our country. The theoretical part distinguishes between political and apolitical communication. Besides other things, it focuses on the characteristics of totalitarianism and democracy and describes the dispositions of language system at both regimes. It also includes a brief history of New Year's speeches and their language particularities because the theoretical part is focused exactly on those communication opportunities. The practical part focuses on the analysis of New Year's speeches of the last totalitarian and the first democratic presidents, with only that exact speech being analysed in detail in both cases. The life stories of both personages are also taken into consideration. Speeches are analysed from the content, linguistic and psychological viewpoint, emphasis being on the meaning of the entire communication. In the conclusion it is attempted to introduce the comparison of both speakers and their communication abilities. Diploma thesis "Husák, Havel, Klaus: New Year's speeches of prezidents in time changes" deals with the traditional New Year's speeches of the last three Czech and Czechoslovak presidents Gusáv Husák, Václav Havel and Václav Klaus. It compares them in the terms of rhetoric and pragmatic linguistic, focusing on their structure, style and applied topics. It also monitors whether and how the presidents in their festive speeches responded and referred to each other. The aim of the thesis is to find out how the presidential New Year's speeches reflected personal experience of the speakers and the circumstances under which these festive speeches were formed. A view behind the scenes of the New Year's speeches is to be revealed by a short survey among the closest associates of presidents. The thesis follows the festive presidents speeches in written form, does not deal with their television or radio appearances. It also contains biographical data of all three heads of the state, with emphasis on their rhetorical skills and experience. Part of the work is also devoted to the history and systematic classification of New Year's presidential speeches in general.
